Who is Nottingham Forest 'target' Massimo Luongo?

Nottingham Forest are again said to be weighing up a move for QPR midfielder Massimo Luongo.

The Reds have been linked with a move for the Australian before, and now, according to reports, that interest has been reignited.

But who is he? And what are the chances of Martin O'Neill landing the midfielder?

His career so far

Luongo moved to England in 2011 to join Tottenham Hotspur, but failed to ever make an impact at White Hart Lane.

Instead, after a loan stint with Ipswich, he became a familiar face for Swindon Town at the County Ground.

After two loan spells there, he joined Town on a permanent basis and was picked in the PFA League One Team of the Year in 2015 for his fine performances in helping Swindon to the play-off final.

That summer, along with teammate Ben Gladwin, Luongo joined QPR on a three-year deal and became a regular for Rangers.

In 2017, he signed a contract extension at Loftus Road until 2020 and now the club are said to be looking to either move him on for a fee or convince to put pen to paper on a new deal.

International career

Luongo was named in Australia's 23-man squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, but did not feature at the tournament.

Instead, his big break at international level came the following season, as Australia's star performer as his nation hosted the 2015 Asian Cup.

Luongo scored twice, including the opener in the tournament's final, as the Socceroos stormed to their first title.

In total, he has earned 42 caps.

Ballon d'Or nominee

After the tournament, Luongo joined Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo on the shortlist for the Ballon d'Or after being named as the Asian Cup's 'most valuable player'.

“I didn’t even know if it was real," he told the Guardian after his nomination. "I thought it was someone trying to be funny.

"It’s obviously a big honour, not many people get on it, I can say I’ve been on the Ballon d’Or list now. I don’t know what to say about it. It’s a bit random.”

Who else is interested

According to reports, it looks set to be a two-horse race to land the talent with the Reds said to be battling it out with Leeds United for the 26-year-old.

Currently, the Whites are well stocked in that position, but should they lose Kalvin Phillips this summer then Luongo could fill the void.

The Reds, on the other hand, are still looking for a permanent replacement for Jack Colback.
