Who is Noel Clarke? Viewpoint star subject of serious misconduct allegations

Friday night's final episode of Viewpoint has been axed by ITV over serious allegations made against its star Noel Clarke.

On Thursday, The Guardian reported on claims of sexual harassment and bullying against the 45-year-old from women who knew him in a professional capacity.

The publication spoke to 20 women who levelled various accusations at him including sexual harassment, unwanted touching or groping, sexually inappropriate behaviour and comments on set, professional misconduct, taking and sharing sexually explicit pictures and videos without consent.

Clarke "vehemently denies" the claims made against him, with his statement issued in response ending: "If anyone who has worked with me has ever felt uncomfortable or disrespected, I sincerely apologise.

"I vehemently deny any sexual misconduct or wrongdoing and intend to defend myself against these false allegations."

The allegations resulted in BAFTA suspending Clarke's membership and recent Outstanding Contribution award and ITV making the decision to pull Viewpoint's final episode although it will be available to watch on itvHub.

Who is Noel Clarke?

Clarke made his first TV appearance in Channel 4's Metrosexuality before seeing his star ascend thanks to landing the part of Mickey Smith in Doctor Who, a role he held for five years.

More recently he has starred as Wyman in Auf Wiedersehen, Pet and as Aaron Bishop in Sky series Bulletproof, which he also writes and directs.

And this week millions tuned into see Clarke in the lead role of Martin Young in ITV's new five-part thriller Viewpoint.

Clarke is the co-founder of production company Unstoppable, along with fellow actor Jason Maza.

The company were behind Jill Halfpenny thriller The Drowning, which gave Channel 5 its biggest drama ever and its highest viewing figures since 2016.

As well as having success in TV, Clarke has also received acclaim for his film work both in front of and behind the camera in the likes of gritty dramas Kidulthood and Adulthood and more recently in The Corrupted and Twist.

He first won a BAFTA in 2009, when he was the recipient of the coveted Rising Star award.

Giving their statement in light of the allegations made against Clarke, BAFTA said: "In light of the allegations of serious misconduct regarding Noel Clarke in The Guardian, BAFTA has taken the decision to suspend his membership and the Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema award immediately and until further notice."
