Who is Michael Rice? Eurovision 2019 UK entry, what he’ll be singing and when

The Eurovision Song Contest Grand Final is being held in Tel Aviv, Israel in May. European Union countries will once again be competing against each other with their chosen entrants, hoping to walk away being crowned winner.

Britain’s entry was selected in BBC Two show Eurovision: You Decide back in February, when six acts performed. The winner was chosen by a celebrity panel and from viewers’ votes.

Michael Rice performed three different songs and was chosen by the celeb panel to make the last three. The viewers then picked him as the UK’s entry.

Here’s what you need to know about Michael…

Michael Rice was born in in Hartlepool in 1997 and is an English singer. He also owns a waffle and milkshake business.

The 21 year old is representing the UK in the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest, with song Bigger Than Us.

He also appeared on BBC One singing show All Together Now in 2018, winning the series and on X Factor in 2014, so he’s used to performing in front of live audiences and on TV.

Michael will sing Bigger Than Us - he says is about love and “coming together”.

He competed against five other acts: Anisa, Maid and Holly Tandy, who didn’t make it through to the final three, due to the celebrity panel votes.

Alongside him in the public vote was Kerrie-Anne and Jordan Clarke, who lost out to him eventually.

He said about his win: “I literally just came off the stage and honestly, I can’t believe I won.

“I never in a million years thought I’d get the chance to do this experience, never mind win it.

“I’m really grateful for all my supporters out there who voted for me, and who’ve been there for me along this journey.

“Let’s do it! Let’s go to Tel Aviv and try and bring it home for us.”

When will the UK's Michael Rice sing in Eurovision?

The ‘big five’ countries are the UK, Germany, Italy France and Spain and are automatically given a place in the final every year, even though we often struggle to score many points.

This is done is because these five countries make the biggest funding contributions to the competition – money buys opportunity.

The only other country that is given a free pass to the final is the host country, who won the event the year before – this year it is Israel.

So Michael won't have to compete in either of the semi-finals - he gets a free pass!
