Who is Michael Prendergast? The coronavirus victim who shared his story to appear on The Late Late Show

The line up for this week's Late Late Show has been revealed as Miriam O'Callaghan is set to step up for hosting duties once again.

Ryan Tubridy is currently off the job as he recovers from the coronavirus but the show will air during it's usual slot tonight.

While the format of the RTE show has changed drastically in recent weeks that hasn't stopped them from keeping the ball rolling as Miriam is set for another evening of chats with a host of guests.

This week will see Miriam chatting to Irish journalist, boradcaster and host of Love Island Laura Whitmore, fitness instructor Joe Wicks and singer/songwriter Gavin James among others.

But one of the more notable guests booked for Friday's show is Michael Prendergast.

Michael, 28, was one of the first Irish people to share their personal experience about battling Covid-19.

He was struck down by the deadly disease after returning home from London and is currently in isolation at Kerry General Hospital.

He opened up about the terror of almost dying as he urged the public to stay safe sharing photos and videos on social media of him in hospital which gained widespread attention.

Michael said: "Once I was experiencing the sickness with it, it brings every sort of existential question. Am I going to live? Have I lived a good life? Did I waste time?"

Michael had previously broken his back and suffered a punctured lung, but he insisted that Covid-19 is “by far and away the worst."

What made his story so horrifying was it marked the first time a critically ill Irish patient had given an account from an Intensive Care Unit of how the lethal illness grips the body.

He said: “I was so ill, it is almost indescribable. It started with an extremely mild headache. I came home on Monday and I had absolutely no symptoms and then on Tuesday, the shortness of breath, extremely high fever – it was just exacerbated every night.

“I had extreme rigors. That is your body’s reaction to infection. I was shaking and by Wednesday night. I was having convulsions in bed.

"It is your body responding to the infection. It is trying to battle it off so it pulls all energy reserves into fighting the battle and it makes you feel like you are not far from death.”

The Late Late Show airs on RTE One at 9.35pm on Friday.
