Who is Mehdi Zeffane? Nottingham Forest 'target' profiled

Nottingham Forest have been linked with a move for former Rennes right-back Mehdi Zeffane.

The 27-year-old looks set to be on the move this summer and, according to Greek website 'to10', Sabri Lamouchi is keen to make him his second summer signing at the City Ground.

But who is he? And is he the man replace Sam Byram at right-back?

Who is he?

Born in France, just outside Lyon, the defender first signed for his boyhood club back in 2003 and spent 12 years there.

After progressing through the ranks, he made his professional debut for the club's B side in 2010, as an 18-year-old.

Following three seasons as a regular for Lyon B, he was promoted to the first-team where he would feature 12 times and receive his debut international cap for Algeria.

However, with opportunities few and far between at the French giants, he made the leap to join Rennes in 2015 in search of more regular game time.

At first it proved an inspired move, as he featured as a utility player in 10 of Rennes' first 14 games, playing at left-back, left midfield and even right midfield.

But his game time then diminished dramatically and it was not until 2017, under Lamouchi, that he returned as a regular starter.

In his final season at Rennes he made 20 league appearances, and helped the club to the last 16 of the Europa League, where they were beaten by Arsenal as Zeffane's assist helped them to their only goal of the tie.

International caps

Currently, Zeffane is away with his nation in Egypt as they compete for the African Cup of Nations.

So far in his career he has picked up 11 caps and turned out for Algeria in their final group game against Tanzania.

Djamel Belmadi's side have so far stormed into the last 16 and are now overwhelming favourites to see off Guinea and progress to the quarter-finals.

How much will he cost?

Good news, Reds fans !

The 27-year-old is a free agent after the four-year-deal he signed back in 2015 expired at the start of this month.

But it is unlikely he will make any formal decision regarding next term until he returns from Egypt, which at this rate will be a few weeks away.

Lamouchi's side are not the only club after his signature, though.

Fiorentina and Espanyol are both said to be interested according to a report by L'Equipe.

But, the same report has also claimed that Zeffane does have an option on the table to extend his deal at Rennes for a further two seasons, and the defender has refused to rule out remaining with the Ligue 1 club.
