Who is Markus Krosche? New name emerges as 'candidate' for Liverpool sporting director

Eintracht Frankfurt sporting director Markus Krosche is a 'candidate' to replace the outgoing Julian Ward at Liverpool, according to a new report.

Ward stepped into the void left by Michael Edwards after his departure from Anfield in the summer of 2022, but then shocked the club in November by announcing his intention to leave at the end of this season.

Liverpool are progressing with their search for a new sporting director. But as the ECHO recently reported, it is understood the club have no plans to appoint a replacement while Ward continues to operate in the job itself and work will go on inside the recruitment department under his watch. Sources at Liverpool have also distanced themselves with interest in Monaco chief Paul Mitchell.

In an Athletic report today, it is claimed that Mitchell was 'strongly considered' for the Reds role, but is now thought to be carrying on with the Ligue 1 side.

In the same article, the Athletic's David Ornstein gave a mention for Krosche as a summer of change looks to be on the horizon for Liverpool. He is described as a "potential candidate attracting interest at Anfield".

Krosche made the switch to Frankfurt in 2021 from RB Leipzig with his contract running out in 2025. The German now has an impressive reputation within the footballing world.

Since arriving at Frankfurt, they have gone on to win the Europa League after defeating Rangers last season and are now in the last-16 of the Champions League, where they will face Napoli on Tuesday.

Krosche took on a different role in 2015 for two years when he was named assistant manager of Bayer Leverkusen, but soon took to the directors' box.

Whoever is appointed will have a busy job on their hands from the start as Jurgen Klopp looks to rebuild his squad - with Jude Bellingham at the top of the list as a summer target.

The process of identifying a new sporting director is set to be a decision that will be overseen by Klopp and CEO Billy Hogan, whose power and influence has increased since FSG president Mike Gordon took the decision to focus his day-to-day efforts on a possible sale.
