Who is Marash Kumbulla? The Verona centre back linked with £26m Tottenham transfer

Tottenham are closely tracking the Hellas Verona centre back Marash Kumbulla as the club look to find a replacement for Jan Vertonghen, according to reports in Italy.

Vertonghen, who joined Spurs from Ajax in 2012, is out of contract next month and has stated his desire to take up a new challenge. He has been linked with moves to Spain and Italy.

That means Tottenham will attempt to strengthen in the next transfer window and Kumbulla is among those that they have been tracking.

According to Gazetta dello Sport, Spurs and Everton have both registered their interest in the 20-year-old.

A product of Verona's academy, he has made 18 Serie A appearances this season and scored once have debuted as an 18-year-old at the start of last season.

Although born in Italy, he chose to represent Albania, the country of his parents' birth, and last year made his competitive debut in European Championship qualifier.

Should Spurs decide to make a formal bid, they will face competition from Antonio Conte's Internazionale.

He would cost about €30million (£26million) and there is a feeling in Italy that he would benefit a move to bigger Serie A club before trying his luck abroad.

Verona sit eighth in Serie A, which is planning to make a return rather than be voided after the coronavirus pandemic.

Spurs have also been linked with a move for Southampton midfield player Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who is out of contract in June 2021 and gave an interview in Denmark in which he said Spurs are a big club and Christian Eriksen has spoken to him about playing in North London.
