Who is Malachi Fagan-Walcott? The academy ace named in the Tottenham squad vs RB Leipzig

Jose Mourinho has sprung a surprise in his Tottenham squad for this evening's Champions League clash against RB Leipzig.

The Spurs boss has limited options at present and he now doesn't have Davinson Sanchez available for the game in Germany due to injury.

That means Toby Alderweireld, Eric Dier and Japhet Tanganga start the match against the Bundesliga high-flyers, with Jan Vertonghen on the bench if needed.

The Colombian's absence at the Red Bull Arena means that Malachi Fagan-Walcott is included in the Spurs squad for the very first time.

But who is the Tottenham substitute?

Born in Edmonton, Fagan-Walcott is a centre-back by trade and he has made quite an impression in the club's academy.

A player blessed with pace as he was a district 200m sprint champion, he made two appearances for the U18s side in 2017/18 before becoming a regular at the back the following season.

Last campaign he was involved in the very first game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as he started in the 3-1 win over Southampton in one of the test events before the grand opening of the club's new home.

Impressing this term in Premier League 2, the UEFA Youth League and the FA Youth Cup, the 17-year-old, who turns 18 tomorrow, has trained with Mourinho's first-team squad at Hotspur Way on a number of occasions so far this season.

He was part of Monday's training session at the club's base before they jetted off to Germany for the second leg of their Champions League clash.

With fellow academy players Japhet Tanganga and Troy Parrott featuring under Mourinho since his appointment as head coach in November, Fagan-Walcott will be hoping to follow in their footsteps by making his bow for the club at the Red Bull Arena against RB Leipzig.
