Who is Mae Muller? The 25-year-old chosen to represent the UK at Eurovision

Mae Muller has been officially revealed as the UK’s entrant for the Eurovision Song Contest 2023. The 25-year-old will head to Liverpool in May where she will perform her song “I Wrote A Song”.

The track has been described as a “daft-but-catchy revenge song, written about her ex-boyfriend” by the BBC. It is hoped that the track can build on the success of the UK in the 2022 competition.

Last year, the United Kingdom finished as runners-up after Sam Ryder’s Spaceman impressed both the jury and the public. So here’s everything you need to know about Mae Muller.

Who is Mae Muller?

The I Wrote You A Song singer was born in 1997, the same year that the UK last took home the Eurovision trophy thanks to Katrina and the Waves. She grew up with her mum, a costume designer, and was no stranger to the music business as her aunt is a music video director.

Muller used to spend afternoons as a runner for artists like Labrinth, for whom she once made tea in a polystyrene cup. "It was my claim to fame for a long time," she told Golden Plectrum.

What songs has she released already?

Thankfully, if you’re wanting to swot up Mae actually has a hefty back catalogue to get stuck into. She’s been making music since she was 19 and recently confessed that she wrote her first song when the WiFi on her train cut out.

The track, called Closer, was a big hit and led her to a record deal with Capitol Records. Her debut album, aptly titled Chapter 1, was released in 2019 and things have continued on the up.

She had a breakout hit alongside Swedish producers Neiked called Better Days and Mae found herself climbing the charts. Better Days sold more than a million copies and has gone platinum in the US.

What is her Eurovision entry?

Mae’s Eurovision song is called “I Wrote A Song” and it’s a diss track for her ex-boyfriend.

"I was really annoyed at this guy. I wanted to do something crazy, maybe burn his house down, I don't know," she explained on TikTok. "But instead I took the high road and I wrote a song. And that's called growth, ladies and gentlemen."

Thankfully Mae has plenty of experience performing live, having supported Liam Payne and Little Mix on tour, sung with Aitch in the Live Lounge and played a sold-out show at Kentish Town Form. She’s also appeared before millions of viewers on TV on The Voice US.
