The first full trailer for DC Studios’ Supergirl arrived on Tuesday, further diving us into the world of Milly Alcock’s Kara Zor-El / Supergirl. The film, which is based on Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s beloved miniseries Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, places Kara against a pretty surprising supporting cast. That includes Lobo (played by Jason Momoa), an alien bounty hunter who clearly has met the Maid of Might at least once, and is more than willing to lend a hand in the fight against Krem (Matthias Schoenaerts) and the Brigands.
So, who exactly is Lobo? Created by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen in 1983’s Omega Men #3, Lobo evolved from a random space villain into a bonafide fan-favorite character. Part of that was due to his big personality and dark backstory (he was the last surviving member of an alien race known as the Czarnians… because he killed them all himself), all of which lampooned the “edgy” characters and comics of the 1990s. His preferred mode of transportation is a motorcycle flanked by flying space dolphins, his colorful vocabulary includes words like “frag” and “bastiche”, and he can often be spotted wearing a biker vest with the words “Bite me fanboy” on the back.
Lobo’s role in the DC Universe constantly evolved: one minute he could be an antagonist of Superman, the next he could be de-aged into a teenager or briefly transformed into a woman, the next he could be contracted by the Easter Bunny to put out a hit on Santa Claus. (Seriously, go yourself a favor and go read the Lobo Paramilitary Christmas Special.) More recently, Lobo’s antics have included fighting Wonder Woman in the recent DC K.O. event, and teaming up with his long-lost teenaged daughter, Crush.
This isn’t his first time Lobo has been adapted to the screen — there were attempts at giving him a network TV show in the ’90s, and he’s been brought to life in various animated projects and SYFY’s tragically-underrated series Krypton. There were even talks of him getting a live-action solo movie set somewhere in the previous DC Extended Universe, which Michael Bay would have been involved with.
But in a way, Momoa was kind of always destined to play Lobo. He advocated for the role in interviews for years, even believing that the initial calls about Aquaman were really about The Main Man. While that didn’t come to pass (and Momoa’s Aquaman was, arguably, a major highlight of the DCEU era), he still expressed a desire to play his favorite character. Sure, some viewers might still recognize Momoa from his days as Arthur Curry… but the impressive prosthetic makeup and gonzo energy he has in this Supergirl footage proves that he’s delivering something unprecedented.
