Who is Liz Truss’ husband, how long have they been married and do they have children?

Liz Truss’ husband is set to become a more prominent figure in her public life after the former Foreign Secretary bagged the top job in the UK government. Hugh O’Leary has been by her side throughout as the 47-year-old has climbed the political ladder.

A quarter of a century on from first meeting, the pair appear as strong as ever as they arrive at 10 Downing Street. In fact, Truss and O’Leary originally met at a Tory Party Conference, marrying not long after.

The politician chooses to keep her family life predominantly private, aside from the odd interview and Instagram post. Here is everything we know about the new prime minister’s husband.

Who is Liz Truss’ husband Hugh O’Leary?

Liz Truss is married to accountant Hugh O’Leary, a profession that Truss is also qualified in. With a very personal family life during her political career, O’Leary has been largely kept in the background with details not widely known.

What is public knowledge is that he attended the London School of Economics. He met his soon-to-be wife at the 1997 Tory Party Conference before going on their first date not long after.

Telling You magazine of their first date, Liz said: "I invited him ice skating and he sprained his ankle."

How long have Liz Truss and Hugh O’Leary been married?

Three years after meeting, Liz Truss and Hugh O’Leary married in 2000. The pair’s marriage survived Liz’s public affair in 2006 with former Conservative MP Mark Field, although Field’s own marriage did end in divorce.

Truss later said how she was "really happily married" while going on to describe O’Leary as the love of her life on social media. Their time is split between London and their home in the market town of Thetford, Norfolk, which is in Liz’s constituency.

Do Liz Truss and Hugh O’Leary have children?

Liz Truss and Hugh O’Leary have two daughters together - Frances and Liberty. Their lives are kept largely private, with the only social media posts being the odd snap of a birthday cake.

From that, it is possible to conclude that Frances was born in 2006 while Liberty was born two years later in 2008. In 2018, Truss told BBC's Pienaar’s Politics that she had locked her daughter’s phone in a box to restrict her screen time, saying: “I’m known as the phone jailer in our household.”

As part of the leadership campaign, Liz enlisted her daughters’ help. France helped out with the digital team after completing a computing GCSE while Liberty was “giving general political advice.”
