Who is Lewis Bate? The Chelsea wonderkid in Frank Lampard's squad for Sheffield United clash

Frank Lampard has a slight dilemma at central midfield this evening when Chelsea make the trip to Sheffield United.

The Blues boss will be without N'Golo Kante and Billy Gilmour, with both players missing the match through injuries.

While Mateo Kovacic has returned to the squad after his latest set-back, Jorginho has come back into the starting XI in the deeper role.

However, Lampard has brought another youngster into the squad as wonderkid Lewis Bate has joined the side for the trip to Sheffield, being named on the bench.

Sheffield United v Chelsea: Premier League match preview

Lampard has not been afraid to bring in youngsters as part of his squad if needed, and several have trained during the Premier League's return, but who is Bate?

football.london takes a look right here.

Who is Lewis Bate?

The 17-year-old is another talented product who has come through the Chelsea academy, having been with the club since the U9s.

He made his U18s debut in May 2018 against Arsenal having captained the U15 side to their various successes in the 2017/18 season, including a victory in the Floodlight Cup.

The youngster has been a key part of the U18s and U19s this season, playing in the heart of the side and making his Development Squad debut in January this year.

Bate also signed his first professional contract with the club back in October, and has represented England a youth level, and has 28 appearances and scored four goals for the Blues.

Bate has a style of Jack Wilshere about him, with an excellent left foot and low centre of gravity, being a good carrier of the ball from the middle of the park.

Since the Premier League's restart, Bate has been a regular in Chelsea's training with the first team.

The Blues can name nine substitutes for the match, and the youngster was among them.
