Who is Laura Pidcock the new Labour MP for the North West Durham constituency?

Born and bred in the North East , Laura Pidcock is a well known figure at political events in the region.

She has often shared political platforms with major Labour figures like leader Jeremy Corbyn and Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell when they’ve visited the North East.

Ms Pidcock, 29, is from Cramlington , Northumberland and studied politics at Manchester Metropolitan University.

She was a mental health support worker before moving to the charity sector, first as an education worker and ultimately as manager of the education team at the UK’s largest anti-racism charity.

Ms Pidcock is an experienced campaigner with the Labour Party , Unite the Union as well as the charity and voluntary sector. She is also a member of Labour’s National Policy Forum.

Recently Ms Pidcock experienced personally the old adage that a week is a long time in politics.

On April 29 it was announced that she was to replace Pat Glass the Shadow Education Minister as the Labour Party’s prospective parliamentary candidate for North-West Durham.

Just six days later on May 5 in the local elections, Ms Pidcock lost her seat on Northumberland County Council on which she had represented the Cramlington Eastfield ward for the last four years.

She lost to the Conservative candidate Christine Dunbar as Labour lost overall control of the council to the Tories.

But Ms Pidcock triumphed in the General Election on June 8, securing 25,308 votes (52.8% of the share). She beat Conservative candidate Sally-Ann Hart, who amassed 16,516 votes.

And in her maiden speech in the House of Commons, Ms Pidcock said Parliament is intimidating and “reeks of the establishment and of power”.
