Who is Kelland Watts? The Newcastle United defender set for first team debut

Kell Watts is in line to make his Newcastle United debut tonight as the injury-hit Magpies prepare to face Brighton.

Steve Bruce will likely be forced into a reshuffle with up to eight first-team players set to be ruled out for the penultimate fixture of the season.

Federico Fernandez is the only first-team central defender available for selection, meaning Watts could be thrust into action from the outset.

But who is the United Academy graduate in line to make his first start for the club?

Born in Alnwick, Watts began his career in midfielder and signed his first professional contract at the Magpies in 2018.

He has represented England at under-19s level, and began the season on loan at League Two outfit Stevenage where he made 20 appearances.

A knee injury curtailed his spell at the Lamex Stadium, but he returned to Tyneside a signed a three-year deal a week after his 20th birthday.

Watts started the second-half of the campaign at League Two rivals Mansfield Town, but this spell was cut short by the coronavirus-enforced suspension of football.

The 20-year-old would typically be ineligible to represent United having already played for two clubs this season, but the Premier League have relaxed the rules in the wake of lockdown and the club's injury crisis.
