Who is John Waters? Columnist and author taking High Court action against COVID-19 restrictions

John Waters and Gemma O'Doherty are currently taking a High Court action against the temporary Covid-19 laws recently introduced in Ireland.

Both will have their case heard in court next week - and supporters of the pair have been gathering outside the Four Courts as the proceedings take place.

Here's all you need to know about John Waters:

Who is John Waters?

Mr Waters is a columnist and author who has published many books over the years.

The 64-year-old Roscommon native began his career in magazine Hot Press and has had roles and columns in the Irish Independent and Irish Times in recent years.

Waters has written many books and non-fiction plays throughout his career.

He is married to wife Rita Simmons since 2014 and has one child.

Political career

The Roscommon man ran under Gemma O'Doherty's "anti-corruption Ireland" banner in the 2020 General Election.

With less than 2% of first preference votes, he was unsuccessful and was eliminated on the first count in the Dun Laoghaire constituency.

Eurovision

John Waters co-wrote the song that was Ireland's entry into the Eurovision in Helsinki in 2007.

"Can't Stop The Spring" was chosen by viewers on the Late Late Show to represent Ireland - it finished last in the competition with just five points in the public vote.
