Who Is Joe Locke? 'Heartstopper' Star Set for West End Debut in Clarkston

Heartstopper actor Joe Locke, the 21‑year‑old star from the Isle of Man, is set to make his highly anticipated West End debut this autumn in the play Clarkston, written by acclaimed American playwright Samuel D. Hunter. This theatre role comes shortly after Locke completed filming on the upcoming Heartstopper movie, which concludes the beloved Netflix coming‑of‑age series.

Locke first gained international recognition as Charlie Spring in Heartstopper, a performance praised by critics and embraced by fans worldwide. In Clarkston, he portrays Jake, a young man from Connecticut diagnosed with Huntington's disease. His character becomes stranded in the small town of Clarkston, Washington, after a road trip goes awry, and develops an unexpected but profound friendship with Chris, a local Costco employee, during their night shifts.

Locke has described Hunter's writing as 'deeply human and honest'. He added: 'I immediately connected with the play when I read it. I can't wait to bring this beautiful story to life and share it with audiences in London.'

Though primarily known for television, Locke has also performed on stage, including at London's Donmar Warehouse and in the Broadway production of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Clarkston marks his first lead role in a West End production, a goal he has cherished since childhood.

Locke continued a tradition from his youth—annual birthday trips from the Isle of Man to London with his mother to attend theatre shows. He said: 'It's very full circle to bring my mum to my press night for my West End debut.'

An Emotionally Rich Play About Friendship and Identity

Clarkston, written by Samuel D. Hunter—whose earlier play The Whale inspired an Oscar‑winning film—centres on life in a small American town. It explores themes of platonic male love, isolation and working‑class challenges. Critics have praised the piece for its raw honesty and authentic portrayal of human resilience.

Locke's character Jake stands in contrast to Chris, played by Ruaridh Mollica, who is coping with a fraught relationship with his drug‑dependent mother, portrayed by Sophie Melville. As their friendship deepens, both men are forced to confront harsh truths about their lives and futures.

About his role, Locke explained: 'He's a flawed character with a bit of bite. That's the fun part about getting to know these characters. They're good and they're bad.'

What lies ahead for Joe Locke

Following his stint in Heartstopper and appearances in Marvel's Agatha All Along, Locke continues to challenge himself with more mature roles. Clarkston is scheduled for a major West End opening this autumn under the direction of Jack Serio.

With this move to the stage, Joe Locke is set to transition from rising TV talent to a versatile actor with a commanding presence in West End theatre.
