Who is New Zealand v Wales referee Wayne Barnes?

Referee Wayne Barnes will hang up his whistle after taking charge of Wales and New Zealand in the Rugby World Cup bronze play-off final today.

The London barrister is taking charge of his 90th Test match today: his 21st at a Rugby World Cup across four tournaments.

He is hanging up his whistle to commit more time to his young family and his other job where he works as a barrister.

He had been the favourite to be given the final, but was obviously out of the equation as soon as England progressed through after beating the All Blacks.

His refereeing and law career, dealing with bribery and corruption, is a far cry from his holiday job as a teenager in the Forest of Dean crushing blackcurrants in the local Ribena factory.

Barnes, of course, was in charge when Wales played their farcical 100-minute match in the 2018 Six Nations.

And reflecting on his stellar career he told BT Sport: "I’m very lucky to have refereed at Twickenham quite a lot.

"I love Twickenham, particularly because I live about 500 metres away from it and I walk to the ground with my bag over my shoulder so you take in all the atmosphere as well.

"For example, at the quarter-final and semi-final of the World Cup, all of the team I was working with met at mine for a bit of lunch then we put our bags on our shoulders and walked across with all the fans through the fan zone! Twickenham is always very special.

"But I think the best atmosphere is the Millennium Stadium by a long way because of the roof, because of the noise.

"I’ve done Wales v Ireland several times and Wales v the All Blacks there, so that’s always a special stadium.

It was in Cardiff, in the 2007 World Cup when Barnes incurred the wrath of All Blacks fans.

And the west countryman admits it's one of his biggest regrets in the game.

“I think, perhaps the most high-profile mistake was in 2007 when there was a forward pass in the lead up to a French try against New Zealand, the fallout from that was pretty huge," he added.

“I think I was voted the third most-hated man in New Zealand that year so it was pretty impressive!

“As a referee you never want to be in the headlines and whenever you are, whether you’re right or wrong, that’s not what you’re there for."

He will also be controlling Georgia v Uruguay and South Africa v
Italy later in the tournament.
