Who is Ian Maatsen? The 17-year-old wonderkid featured in Frank Lampard's first pre-season game

Chelsea's pre-season tour to Ireland has a real mix of youth and senior first team players, but Ian Maatsen is the youngest of the lot.

At just 17, Maatsen has joined Frank Lampard's squad to Dublin to take on Bohemians FC and St Patrick's Atheltic.

The teenager has soon found himself thrown into the action, coming on at left-back, as part of the second half team in the Blues' opening pre-season friendly at Dalymount Park on Wednesday evening.

It is the start of a busy summer for the Blues as they play seven matches in five countries, with a trip to Japan, a match in England and then games against RB Salzburg and Borussia Monchengladbach.

While a lot of the first team are yet to join up with Lampard's training camp, Maatsen has been given his chance to impress this week.

So who is the youngster and why has he already been given a first team chance?

The youngster has not been with the club very long, having only joined from PSV last summer, having come through their academy, as well as Feyenoord and Sparta Rotterdam.

Maatsen originally played in the U18s, however got his chances in the U23s Development Squad, playing in the Checkatrade Trophy in September.

The Dutch youth international also played a big part in Chelsea getting to the final of the UEFA Youth League, where they eventually lost to a strong Porto side.

But it is not on the domestic stage where Maatsen has had his most success, being a key part of the Netherlands U17s squad that won the European Championships for the second year in a row this year, scoring in the final.

With a decent left foot, Maatsen has the ability to play at centre-back, left-back and in midfield as well, having also played in a variety of different systems under Joe Edwards and U18s head coach Andy Myers.
