Who is Hugo Ekitike? The teenage wonderkid linked with Newcastle who wants to emulate Kylian Mbappe

Newcastle United have been linked with a number of upcoming stars since the January transfer window opened.

The latest of those, being French wonderkid Hugo Ekitike.

Several outlets are reporting the Magpies have opened talks with Ligue 1 side Reims over a deal for the striker, who only made his debut for the club back in August.

The 19-year-old has scored eight goals and registered three assists in his appearances to date and has seen early comparisons to Kylian Mbappe.

The Reims striker is also looking to emulate the PSG striker himself.

"Over the last few years, he is the player I watch the most, who inspires me, and not necessarily only on the pitch," he told Foot Mercato. "That's what it means to be a top-level player and that's what I aspire to become."

The 6ft2 striker is the top goal scoring youngster across Europe's five top leagues; the Premier League, Serie A, La Liga, Bundesliga and Ligue 1.

He began his career at Cormontreuil FC before signing for Reims youth set-up in 2013.

Ekitike made quite the impression on those at the Ligue 1 club, scoring six times in 15 appearances for Reims II, before joining Danish Superliga club Vejle Boldklub on loan in January 2021, for the remainder of the season.

He scored three times in 11 appearances before returning to Stade Auguste-Delaune and making his mark on the first team.
