Who is hockey star Lily Owsley: The Bristol City fan representing Team GB at the Olympics

The 2020 Olympics, despite the year delay, look set to be one of the highlights of the summer.

Many events have already begun, and this weekend, one of our most anticipated Olympic sports, Hockey, starts. And one of the stars of the British hockey team is one of our own: Lily Owsley.

Owsley grew up in Bristol, taking up hockey at the age of 13 after moving to a new school, Clifton College. "They chucked a stick in my hand and I was terrible," she once told BBC Sport. "I was awful, but after three or four sessions, I slowly moved up the ranks."

She was clearly talented in other sports, too: she played for Bristol City's girls team as a youngster, and also excelled as a middle-distance runner. She continues to support City today, and the club wished her luck on Twitter ahead of Tokyo 2020.

Perhaps it was to be expected for Lily to become a professional sportswoman. After all, her mother, Jen Owsley, played club hockey in England and has also worked as a coach at Bristol City's academy.

Her father, too, was sporty: he coached youth rugby at Clifton College. Last, but not least, Lily's sister Emily has played hockey for her university team. Oh, and her brother Freddie has played for Bristol Rugby. Not too shabby for one family!

After leaving school, Lily went on to study sport science at the University of Birmingham, and later a master's degree at King's in London.

She has spent the last couple of years at club level playing for Hampstead and Westminster, but she's signed to the Dutch team HDM from next season onwards.

She has faced her own share of setbacks, though, suffering with meningitis in 2015 to the point where she was on a drip in hospital. Within six months, she'd recovered, helping England win the European Championship and aiding Great Britain in qualifying for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Team GB went on to win the gold medal thanks to a shoot-out victory over the Netherlands, with Owsley playing a starring role in the tournament. She was later made an MBE, too.

Let's hope she can repeat her 2016 glory this year in Tokyo. Team GB's first hockey match is against Germany on Sunday, July 25 at 1.30am BST. They'll go on to play South Africa, India, the Netherlands, and Ireland later in the tournament.

Good luck, Lily!
