And tonight's final Line of Duty episode of season six could provide some viewers with some much needed answers to the enduring question.
One Ayrshire business is even rewarding one lucky viewer who happens to guess who H is.
Varani's Forum Ices is giving a litre of ice-cream or sorbet of choice to one person who correctly identifies H ahead of the finale at 9pm.
The popular Kilmarnock shop wants amateur Ayrshire detectives to comment on their Facebook post to be in with a chance of winning.
The post said: "We're running a quick fire competition tonight.
"All you need to do to enter is guess who H is correctly in the comments.
"One winner will be picked from the correct answers.
"The winner will receive 1 Litre of ice cream/sorbet of your choice.
"Good luck team and let’s get these bent coppers."
