Indian-origin engineer Gurtej Sandhu, who grew up in Amritsar and studied at IIT Delhi, is drawing widespread attention online after being recognised as the seventh most prolific inventor in United States history, reigniting discussions around brain drain and innovation opportunities abroad.
The debate gained momentum after a viral post on X stated, “India trains the engineer and America files the patents. We export the inventor and we import the chip,” using Sandhu’s journey as an example of Indian talent achieving major breakthroughs overseas.
