Who is Gleison Bremer? Torino defender profiled amid Newcastle United transfer links

Perhaps Newcastle United's most high profile search for a signing this month is in the centre of defence, which is the area the Magpies have most suffered this season. Only Norwich City have conceded more than Newcastle and at least one centre back signing is seen as absolutely essential if they are to have any chance of fixing their leaky defence.

Sven Botman has been spoken about often but any deal for the Dutchman appears dead as Lille have no intention of selling. As such, Newcastle are moving on to other targets and one name to emerge in recent days is Torino's Gleison Bremer, as reported by Corriere Granata, via Football Italia.

He is one of the more lesser-known of Eddie Howe's potential targets and Chronicle Live has the lowdown on his background.

Who is he?

Bremer is a 24-year-old Brazilian. He moved to Italy from Atletico Mineiro in 18/19 after impressing as a young player in Brazil. He cost the Italian club a fee of just over £5 million.

He played sporadically in his first season in Europe but has become a mainstay of Torino's defence ever since his second season.

What is his style of play?

Bremer has said that he wants to play in the manner that legendary Brazilian defend Lucio did. Whilst some Brazilian centre backs can have a penchant for the flamboyant, Bremer is physical, good in the air and a defender first-and-foremost, which is what Newcastle need.

What has been said about him?

"Bremer needs bigger pockets. Kept Vlahovic in there all game at the Franchi. Latest impressive performance from the Torino centre-back who I got to speak to in April. Colossus" - James Horncastle [Serie A correspondent for The Athletic and BT Sport] on his Twitter feed.

How much will he cost?

It's likely to take a bid of at least £25 million to secure the defender as he is on the rise in terms of his reputation and will be coming into his prime years.

Are other teams interested?

Tottenham, Chelsea and Liverpool have all been linked with the centre back in recent seasons. Should a deal look like happening, they could position themselves to make an offer for a player that is clearly highly-rated.
