Who is George Johnston of Liverpool? Young star hoping to impress in pre-season

Celebrating his 21 birthday on September 1, George Johnston is hardly a baby – he's over three years older than fellow red-headed centre-back Sepp van den Berg.

But he has yet to make a competitive appearance for the Liverpool first team.

Johnston made his Anfield bow in the final friendly match of last summer when he came on as an 88 minute substitute for Nat Phillips in the 3-1 win over Torino.

Despite being born in Manchester, Johnston, who has been with Liverpool since the age of nine is a Scotland youth and Under-21s international.

Tranmere Rovers vs Liverpool LIVE updates from pre-season match

A member of Neil Critchley's Under-23s side in Premier League 2 last season, making 36 appearances and scoring four goals, he is an old-fashioned type of defender.

Johnston is known for his fully-committed play and last-ditch tackles.

Often positioned on the left-hand side of a centre-back pair, he also turned out on eight occasions for Barry Lewtas' team in the UEFA Youth League.

It is expected that he could feature for Liverpool in this summer's pre-season campaign, perhaps this evening against Tranmere Rovers at Prenton Park.

The Reds take on Tranmere in a 7.30pm kick off tonight.

And with plenty of Klopp's first team stars yet to return to training, it is a big chance for youngsters such as Johnston to impress and catch the manager's eye.
