Who is Filippo Giraldi? The former Watford man who has arrived at Nottingham Forest

There are set to be some changes at Nottingham Forest following the team’s fifth Premier League defeat in a row on Monday night.

The latest defeat saw the Reds fall to a 4-0 loss against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium, a result which meant the team fell to the bottom of the Premier League. First half goals from James Maddison (x2) and Harvey Barnes put the game out of reach at half-time before Patson Daka added a fourth in the second period.

The result and performance transferred some of the pressure that was being felt by Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers onto the shoulders of Forest boss Steve Cooper. There has been uncertainty over his future since Monday’s match, but it now seems that he will be in charge of Forest next week.

According to the Telegraph , Cooper will take charge of the game vs Aston Villa, but there could be some changes behind the scenes. Former Watford man Filippo Giraldi has taken up the role of sporting director at the City Ground.

So who is the new arrival at the club and what will he bring to the role? NottinghamshireLive has taken a look….

Who is Filippo Giraldi?

The 48-year-old has worked as a chief scout, managing director of sport and a technical director within professional football. His first club were AC Prato, who now play in the fourth tier of Italian football, the Italian was managing director of sport for the club for a total of nine years between the years of 2001 and 2010.

At the end of his time with Prato, Giraldi moved onto Serie B side Brescia Calcio as a chief scout before taking up the same role at Watford two-and-a-half years later. After five years as chief scout at Vicarage Road, he was promoted to technical director, a role which he held for three years until the summer of 2020.

What will he bring to Forest?

During his time at Watford, Giraldi was the man who discovered now Tottenham man Richarlison. He is also someone who will work closely with the head coach in order to understand the playing style.

Speaking to the Athletic back in February last year, Giraldi said: “You have to support the coach, speak with them more before than after you do an analysis. But if you really want to be a support, you have to discuss playing style. My respect for every coach has been total.”

Having been with Watford for a number of years, he will bring experience and knowhow of how Premier League football works.

Watford are of course known for being ruthless with managers, if it will be the same at the City Ground is still to be seen. The new man is set to work with Cooper in order to try to help Forest stay in the Premier League.
