Who is Evangelos Marinakis? The Olympiacos owner diagnosed with coronavirus after Arsenal visit

The announcement from Olympiacos and Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis that he has contracted coronavirus has hit football heavily on Tuesday.

Revealing his case on social media, Marinakis has sparked concern as he was in attendance for Forest's clash against Millwall, reportedly meeting the players earlier in the day.

With the case also coming less than two weeks after Olympiacos knocked Arsenal out of the Europa League, where Marinakis was in the changing room and on the field at the Emirates Stadium, concerns have been raised.

But who exactly is the Greek businessman? Here's everything you need to know.

Nottingham Forest purchase

Evangelos Marinakis has been president and owner of Greek Superleague side Olympiacos since the mid-2010s.

He has made a significant impact at Nottingham Forest since he bought the Championship club in May 2017.

Much has changed at the City Ground since the Greek took charge, with a behind the scenes structure in place, an emphasis on the Reds’ role off the pitch and plans to redevelop the stadium.

Business interests

Shipping is something Marinakis’ family have had a long involvement in. It is where he first made his name in the business world, and he now has more than 27 years’ experience in the industry.

Marinakis is the founder and chairman of Capital Maritime & Trading Corp, which controls a fleet of 80 vessels with overall tonnage of about 9m tonnes.

Under his guidance, Capital has diversified from a dry bulk company two decades ago into product and crude tankers as well as containers and LNG carriers.

Charity work

Ensuring Forest help the local and wider community is one of the core principles Marinakis has been keen for the club to adopt.

And he has done a great deal of charity work himself throughout his career.

This year, in recognition of his charity work, Marinakis was  awarded the Grand Cross of the Holy Temple of St Spyridon the Wonderworker  by Metropolitan Seraphim of Piraeus in his homeland.
