- Emilio Gay has been named in England’s squad for their first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s, which is due to get underway on 4 June.
- Gay, 26, has hit three centuries for Durham this season, and appears to be in pole position to open the batting alongside Ben Duckett next month, despite batting at No 3 for his county.
- Gay was born in Bedford, England in April 2000, while his father is from Grenada and his mother is Italian.
- The left-handed batter played three T20 internationals for Italy last year, and managed a best score of 50 in these matches, but he is still eligible to play for England and has now been rewarded for his positive start to the season.
- He looks most likely to be in direct competition with fellow uncapped player, James Rew, to open the batting, while Sonny Baker, who has never played Test cricket for England, has also made the squad and is pushing to be part of England’s bowling attack.
