Who is Dion Charles? Accrington Stanley striker linked with January Bolton Wanderers transfer

Bolton Wanderers are poised to be active in the upcoming January transfer window.

Wanderers had a successful mid-season window in the 2020/21 campaign with several big signings made which contributed to their promotion out of League Two.

MJ Williams, Kieran Lee, Declan John and Dapo Afolayan were all big success stories which came out of last January.

Wanderers will be hoping for similar success this time around in January and one player who has been linked with a switch in the upcoming window is Dion Charles.

The Accrington Stanley striker is out of contract at the Wham Stadium in the summer of 2022 and has been linked with a move to Bolton, with Wanderers understood to be interested in the forward.

A report from Football Insider claims that Wanderers are in advanced talks and that Stanley want £250,000 for the forward.

So who is the forward who could be coming to Wanderers next month if the move becomes a reality?

Charles is 26-years-old and came through the youth team ranks at Blackpool.

He never made an appearance for the Seasiders and later spent two seasons at AFC Fylde, which also included a loan spell at Skelmersdale United.

He later moved on to Fleetwood Town but made just one appearance for the Cod Army, and later headed out on loan to FC Halifax Town from Highbury Stadium.

He joined National League North side Southport in January 2018 and stayed with the Sandgrounders until the summer of 2019 when he joined Stanley.

Charles has scored a total of 30 goals in 97 games for Stanley, including 20 goals in all competitions last season.

But the Northern Ireland international, who has five caps for his country, has not played for Accrington since early September as he has refused to sign a new contract at the Wham Stadium, with manager John Coleman describing the situation as like a 'Mexican stand-off'.

He has not been named in an Accrington matchday squad since the loss on the road to Sunderland and will enter the last six months of his deal at the club in January, with him poised to be a free agent in the summer.
