Darline Graham Nordone was appointed as South Carolina's interim US senator by Governor Henry McMaster following the sudden death of Senator Lindsey Graham.

The appointment allows her to serve the remainder of her brother's Senate term until a Republican nominee is chosen through a special election process. The announcement came after officials, including President Donald Trump called for Nordone to serve as his replacement in a "tribute" to the senator.

"It is such an honour. Lindsey has always been there for me and now I will be there for him," Nordone said.

Nordone's appointment is historic because she becomes the first woman to represent South Carolina in the US Senate, even though her tenure is expected to be temporary.

Who is Darline Graham Nordone?

Although she is now entering national politics, Darline Graham Nordone has spent most of her professional life working in public service rather than elected office.

She has previously worked with South Carolina state agencies, Clemson University and disability employment services. She also served as Commissioner of the South Carolina Commission for the Blind, focusing on improving opportunities for people with visual disabilities.

Unlike her brother, Nordone had never sought elected office before her Senate appointment. However, she remained one of Lindsey Graham's closest confidantes and frequently appeared alongside him during campaign events, including his 2015 presidential campaign.

The tragedy that shaped their lives

The bond between Lindsey Graham and Darline Graham Nordone was forged through family tragedy. Their mother died of Hodgkin's lymphoma when Lindsey Graham was in his early twenties. About 15 months later, their father died of a heart attack, leaving 13-year-old Darline orphaned.

At just 22 years old, Lindsey Graham became his younger sister's legal guardian while attending law school and serving in the Air Force. He later legally adopted her so she could receive military benefits, effectively becoming both her brother and parent.

Speaking during Lindsey Graham's 2015 presidential campaign, Nordone described their relationship in heartfelt words:

"He's kind of like a brother, a father and a mother rolled into one."

She also said: "I've always looked up to Lindsey."

Family life

Unlike her brother, who never married, Darline Graham Nordone has built a family of her own.

She is married, has two children and has largely maintained a private life despite occasionally appearing alongside Lindsey Graham at political events. Friends and colleagues have described her as someone devoted to public service and community work rather than partisan politics.

What is Darline Graham Nordone's net worth?

Darline Graham Nordone has not publicly disclosed her net worth, and there are no official financial disclosures that reveal the exact value of her assets.

However, public salary records offer some insight into her earnings. According to Gov Salaries, Nordone earned an annual salary of $138,000 in 2025 as the Agency Head of the South Carolina Commission for the Blind. The salary was 88% higher than the agency's average salary and 98% higher than its median salary.

Records show she served as Agency Head from 2019 to 2025. Since taking on the role in 2019, her annual salary increased by $42,120, representing a 43.9% rise over six years.

Despite these publicly available salary figures, Darline Graham Nordone's exact net worth remains unknown, as she has not released details about her personal finances, investments or assets.

For comparison, her late brother, Senator Lindsey Graham, had an estimated net worth of around $2 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth. Like many celebrity wealth estimates, that figure is based on publicly available information and should be viewed as an estimate rather than an official accounting.
