Who is Charlie Savage? Profile of Manchester United youngster on bench for Champions League vs Young Boys

Charlie Savage is in contention to make his senior Manchester United debut on Wednesday night.

Savage was added to United's Champions League squad on Tuesday alongside fellow academy talents Bjorn Hardley, Charlie Wellens, Sam Mather, Zidane Iqbal and Shola Shoretire, which means Ralf Rangnick could hand the youngster his first full appearance. He starts the match against Young Boys on the bench.

The 18-year-old signed his first professional contract with United in April and he was promoted to the Reds' U23s side this term.

But ahead of Savage potentially making his senior debut, who is the youngster and what can we expect from him?

Name: Charlie Savage

Date of birth: December 5 2002

Position: Central midfield

Nationality: Welsh

Career history: Savage has been an energetic midfielder throughout various age levels of United's youth ranks.

Just like his father, Robbie Savage, he plays in midfield and he made 23 appearances for United’s Under-18s last season.

Savage scored three goals and provided seven assists last term, often playing in a box-to-box midfield role and his performances were rewarded with a first professional deal while promotion to United's U23s for this campaign soon followed.

Savage has already made 16 appearances for United's U23s and he's regularly featured for Wales' youth teams, following in his father's footsteps, although he revealed that it's actually Scott McTominay he's hoping to emulate at United.

“The main inspiration for me is Scott — he’s the best with us. He comes over to talk to us. He had it difficult in the youth team," Savage said. “He didn’t play many matches but he just kept going and he proved it’s not always the standout players who make the first team.

“Sometimes it’s the players who might have had a back seat but they keep pushing and pushing. Scott, Marcus Rashford and also Brandon Williams all inspire us to improve and move forward.”
