Who is Carl Winchester? The lowdown on Sunderland's new midfielder

Sunderland have made their first signing of the January transfer window with the capture of Forest Green's central midfielder Carl Winchester.

Sunderland are in desperate need of some midfield enforcements if they're to turn a stagnating season around.

The 27-year-old has clocked up 265 senior appearances throughout his career, including an international cap for Northern Ireland.

The Belfast born midfielder is no stranger to Lee Johnson, having managed him during his time at Oldham.

But what type of player is he?

Winchester first made a name for himself in English football at the Latics and notched over 100 appearances at Boundary Park.

He became a fan favourite because of his energetic runs from midfield - something that the Black Cats have been crying out for this season.

The Northern Irishman is known for his versatility and can operate in central midfield, right wing and even at right back.

A string of impressive performances last season saw Forest Green manager, Mark Cooper, tip him for a move away from the New Lawn

Speaking ahead of Rovers trip to Oldham last season, Cooper said: “He’s a Championship player and if I was a Championship manager, he’d be one of the first players I would take."
