Who is Callum Scott Howells? Welsh Cabaret star performs on Graham Norton's New Year Show

While many of us know the unmistakable Callum Scott Howells very well here in Wales, the young actor will perform to millions on Graham Norton's New Year's Eve special on BBC One, alongside his Cabaret co-star, Madeline Brewer, and some viewers may wonder where they have seen him before.

The Welsh star, who will be on stage here in Wales in the spring, more on that here, shot to fame in early 2021 when he appeared as Colin in Russell T Davies' It's a Sin - the smash-hit, heartbreaking drama about the rise of AIDS and HIV in the 1980s.

So if you want to find out more about the multi-talented, Cardiff City fan from the valleys, read on.

Who is Callum Scott Howells?

From Tonyrefail on the edge of the Rhondda Valleys, 23-year-old Callum was a regular in local drama society, Selsig's, productions at the Park and Dare Theatre in Treorchy and attended the nearby comp, but it was after his time at Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama that he shot to fame around the UK after being cast in Doctor Who showrunner, Russell T Davies', It's a Sin. Callum starred alongside Keeley Hawes, Olly Alexander and Neil Patrick Harris amongst others and he won a RTS Award for Best Actor for his role as the innocent Welsh tailor who eventually succumbs to the awful disease which ravaged the gay community in the 1980s.

As well as landing roles in amazing projects, Callum is also a huge football fan and a season ticket holder for Cardiff City and has loved the club since his dad first took him to a 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest at Ninian Park back in January 2009.

What else has Callum done?

In the past year he's made a Netflix film about football, The Beautiful Game. More on that, here. He's also voiced a character on children's TV show, Lloyd of the Flies.

Landing another huge role, this time on the West End stage, Callum is currently playing The Emcee in Cabaret at The Playhouse Theatre, and will do so until January 28. He said of getting the iconic role: "I can't wait to work with the incredible team and company, and follow on from two actors who I hugely respect and admire. I feel very lucky and excited to be taking on such an iconic role within this widely celebrated and unique production. It's going to be a ride."

You can see Callum's performance on The Graham Norton Show on New Year's Eve from 10.35pm or catch up on iPlayer.
