Who is BTS's Jungkook and why is he playing Qatar World Cup opening ceremony?

With the World Cup getting underway on Sunday, eyes will be turning towards the World Cup's opening ceremony and Qatar's organising committee is expected to take the opportunity to demonstrate their culture to the world prior to the tournament starting.

The opening fixture sees Ecuador facing the host nation at the Al-Bayt stadium in Qatar, with the Group A fixture the first chance many will have to see Qatar in action. Prior to the match - which kicks off at 4pm UK time on Sunday, 20 November - there will be a lavish opening ceremony with a range of stars from the world of entertainment expected to perform.

Robbie Williams will be part of proceedings, with the British artist having come under fire for his participation given the criticism of LGBT laws in Qatar. Shakira is also rumoured to be joining Williams at the curtain raiser and could perform a version of her hit 'Waka Waka' track from the 2010 World Cup.

Williams was also part of the Russian World Cup opening ceremony in 2018 and will be joined this time by K-Pop star who is a huge star as part of the BTS group.

Here is everything you need to know about the South Korean star:

Who is Jungkook?

As the youngest member of the band, BTS, the 25-year-old is the lead singer (main vocalist) and has forged a successful solo career having made his name with the group who are famous for hits such as 'Butter' and 'Dynamite'.

His popularity has made him one of the biggest stars in the K-Pop world and subsequently a well-known name in the world of music globally.

In March 2021, he broke the record for the most simultaneous viewers on the South Korean video streaming platform 'V Live', with 22 million simultaneously watching his stream. In addition to this, he enjoyed the highest number of retweets on a single tweet in both 2019 and 2021.

Why is he performing at the World Cup opening ceremony?

The official BTS Twitter account confirmed last week that Jungkook will perform at the opening ceremony in Qatar - and that he has contributed to the official tournament soundtrack.

The tweet read: “Proud to announce that Jung Kook is part of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Soundtrack & will perform at the World Cup opening ceremony. Stay tuned!”

BTS have acquired fame on a global level and Jungkook is the latest in a long line of stars to perform at a World Cup opening ceremony.
