Who is Billy Monger and what is his challenge for Comic Relief 2021?

Billy Monger is this year's Comic Relief hero as he set out to complete a painstaking challenge.

The professional racing driver and double leg amputee has taken on an extraordinary triathlon inspired challenge as he walks, kayaks, and cycles 140 miles.

Billy's incredible journey is set to be show in an hour-long documentary on tonight, Thursday March 18, at 9pm, on BBC One.

For the challenge, which took place over the course of four days in February, the 21-year-old battled the elements as well as physical and mental exhaustion, as he set out on his challenge.

It ended on February 26 as Billy completed 18 laps at his "home track" of Brands Hatch on a bike and three on foot.

Along the way, he was supported by family, friends and some very special guests to help spur him on to the finish line.

Billy, who started racing at just six years old, was one of the UK's most exiting, upcoming talents and earned himself the nickname of #BillyWhizz.

But in April 2017, following a crash at Donington Park circuit, Billy had to have both legs amputated.

This didn't keep Billy down for long as within a year he was back behind the wheel and became the first-ever double amputee to race competitively in a single-seater racing car, at 18.

Comic Relief has said that the money Billy raises will help support a number of life-changing projects both across the UK and around the world.

Whether it’s tackling mental health stigma, taking action against domestic abuse, providing safety to families who need support, or helping to give children the best start in life.

And with the impact of the coronavirus pandemic increasing demand, the money raised will also reach some of the most vulnerable in society who have been hit hardest by this crisis.
