Who Is Benjamin Song? Why Did Texas Issue A Blue Alert Because Of Him?

A coordinated attack at a Texas detention centre involves a military-trained suspect, prompting a nationwide manhunt and a Blue Alert.

A manhunt in Texas has escalated to nationwide attention after a violent attack on a federal detention centre, prompting the state to issue a Blue Alert for Benjamin Hanil Song.

The event has shocked local communities and law enforcement alike, raising urgent questions about who Song is and why the authorities see him as a significant threat.

The Background of the Incident

On the night of 4 July 2025, an armed assault took place at the Prairieland Detention Centre in Alvarado, Texas. A group, allegedly including Benjamin Song, launched a coordinated attack using military-style tactics. During this incident, an Alvarado police officer was shot and wounded. The FBI quickly identified Song as the 12th suspect involved in the attack, sparking a statewide alert to find him.

Who Is Benjamin Hanil Song?

Benjamin Song is a 32-year-old resident of Dallas, Texas. He served in the US Marine Corps Reserve from 2011 to 2016, making him a veteran with military experience. His background and military training have raised particular concern among authorities, given the nature of the assault.

Song is now charged with three counts of attempted murder of a federal officer and three counts of discharging a firearm during a crime of violence.

Why Did Texas Issue a Blue Alert?

A Blue Alert is a safety warning issued when a law enforcement officer is seriously injured or killed, and the suspect remains at large, posing a threat to public safety. In this case, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) activated the alert after Song allegedly opened fire on officers at the detention centre. The alert aims to inform the public to remain vigilant and report any sightings of Song, who is considered armed and dangerous.

Details of the Attack and Song's Role

According to reports, Song was in charge of firing at the detention facility with two AR-15 rifles. He and a group of 10 to 11 others wore black military-style clothing during the attack. Investigators traced the weapons used in the assault to Song through purchase records, indicating premeditation. The attack involved rapid gunfire and vandalism, with shooters firing 20 to 30 rounds at unarmed correctional officers and police.

Witnesses describe the scene as highly coordinated, with suspects using fireworks, graffiti, and tactical gear. One officer was shot in the neck, and the group fled the scene immediately after. Law enforcement recovered several weapons, including rifles equipped with rapid-fire triggers, from nearby woods and vehicles.

The Manhunt and Current Status

Following the attack, authorities tracked Song's phone near the detention centre and located a vehicle linked to him. Despite efforts, Song remains at large and is considered armed and extremely dangerous. The FBI has offered a reward of up to £20,000 (approximately $25,000) for information leading to his arrest and conviction.

Law enforcement officials emphasise that they will pursue him relentlessly. Acting U.S. Attorney Nancy E. Larson stated that Song's escape would not stop their efforts to bring him into custody. The investigation includes multiple agencies, including the FBI, ICE, the Texas Department of Public Safety, and local police.

Legal Charges and Implications

Song faces serious federal charges, including attempted murder of a federal officer and discharging a firearm during a violent crime. These charges carry severe penalties, with potential prison sentences of 10 years to life. The charges reflect the gravity of the attack and the ongoing threat he poses.
