Who is France v USA referee Ben O'Keeffe?

If there's ever a job to go hand in hand with a rugby referee then Ben O'Keeffe has it.

Shouts of 'get some glasses, you're blind ref' from disgruntled fans will definitely fall on deaf ears.

Because the New Zealander doubles up as a doctor specialising in ophthalmology, which deals with eye health and disease.

He told the New Zealand Herald: "A lot of people, you know, they have their opinions about the way referees can see and I'm pretty qualified actually as well to tell those people how their vision is.

"It's really important that we keep pretty healthy eyes because we've got to see what's happening on the field, and if we can't keep up with that then it's pretty difficult."

The 2017 New Zealand Rugby Referee of the Year started his officiating career while at the University of Otago.

When deciding on whether to continue playing rugby his father, who was a referee, suggested he should give refereeing a try to stay involved in the game.

"As a referee, you want to set the guidelines that the players can play and hopefully not have too much input after that.

"With the skillset the players had on that day I was able to just let them play rugby and I think it was a really good spectacle for the spectators."

He was involved in a fiery exchange with Ireland superstar Johnny Sexton on their 2018 summer tour to Australia.

Sexton was forced to takeover the captaincy duties from Peter O’Mahony in the third Test, after the back-row was forced off with a nasty head injury.

Calling for Pascal Gauzere to take another look at the challenge in the air with Israel Folau that resulted in O’Mahony’s injury, he uttered the words: "I know you hate me, but I'm captain now - you have to talk to me."

After the Australia v Fiji clash, O'Keeffe will also take charge of the France v USA and Japan v Scotland games.
