He will now face Republican Jay Feely in the November general election in a closely watched race that could help determine control of the US House of Representatives.
Shah's victory over Republican-turned-Democrat Marlene Galán-Woods marks another setback for the national Democratic Party. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) has faced scrutiny after its preferred candidates were also defeated in primaries in Maine's 2nd Congressional District and California's 22nd Congressional District.
Arizona's 1st Congressional District, which includes Scottsdale and surrounding northeastern suburbs, is considered one of the most competitive House battlegrounds in the country.
The seat is currently held by Republican David Schweikert, who chose to run for governor instead of seeking re-election but lost the GOP primary on Tuesday to Representative Andy Biggs. Schweikert has represented the district since 2023, after previously serving Arizona's 5th and 6th Congressional districts.
Who is Amish Shah?
Amish Shah, a physician and former Arizona state lawmaker, was born and raised in Chicago to parents who immigrated from India in the 1960s while pursuing engineering studies in the United States.
Shah earned a bachelor's degree in economics from Northwestern University, before completing his medical degree through the university's Honors Program in Medical Education. He later worked at international strategy consulting firm LEK Consulting and went on to earn a Master of Public Health from the University of California, Berkeley, on a full merit scholarship.
He completed his residency in emergency medicine at one of New York City's busiest Level I trauma centres and won the American Academy of Emergency Medicine's National Resident Research Competition for developing a new method of treating critically ill patients.
Shah served as a faculty member and academic researcher at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, where he taught medical students and residents and published research in peer-reviewed journals. He also led the New York Jets' Airway Management Team, helping strengthen the NFL's emergency response protocols through research on managing catastrophic injuries, which he later presented to the NFL Physicians' Society.
Shah completed a sports medicine fellowship at the University of Arizona, where his clinical work and research focused on ultrasound-guided diagnostics and procedures. He is board-certified in emergency medicine and sports medicine and currently practises across Arizona, treating both adults and children.
Beyond medicine, Shah founded the Arizona Vegetarian Food Festival, a philanthropic initiative aimed at promoting healthy eating and preventing lifestyle-related diseases.
Outside his medical practice, Shah enjoys playing basketball, flying small aircraft and adventure travel. He is also fluent in Gujarati and speaks conversational Spanish.
