Who is Alex Moreno? Man City and Chelsea linked with shock transfer for £13m Aston Villa star

Chelsea have been linked with a shock move for Aston Villa star Alex Moreno ahead of the summer transfer window. The Spaniard joined Unai Emery's side in the January transfer window and has impressed with his performances at Villa Park.

Moreno has registered three assists in 16 appearances for Villa since completing a £13million move to the Midlands outfit from Real Betis. The Spaniard has provided more goal contributions than Mykhailo Mudryk, Noni Madueke and Enzo Fernandez - with all three players costing the Blues over £200million.

Todd Boehly is expected to invest in the playing squad once again this summer as he looks to overhaul the playing squad. Marc Cucurella was signed in a £60million deal from Brighton last summer but has failed to impress in his debut season, leading to speculation that he could be moved on after just one year at Stamford Bridge.

Cucurella has been deployed as a third centre-back at times this season, leaving just Ben Chilwell to start at left wing-back with no quality competition in the squad. With that being said, football.london takes a look at what Moreno could offer the Blues if he was to be signed from Villa this summer.

According to Footmercato, Chelsea and City are interested in signing the Spanish defender after an impressive spell with Emery's side. Moreno is a versatile defender and midfielder from Spain.

At 29 years of age, the former Real Betis star can play either as a left-back, left winger, or right winger – though he has played predominantly at the left of a back four. Moreno’s best season to date came in the 2021/22 campaign as he scored five goals and contributed four assists in 30 La Liga appearances.

Standing at 5ft 9in, the Spaniard is not the strongest when it comes to aerial battles, but he makes up for it in other areas of his play. Moreno is fairly quick and possesses a lot of stamina which helps him get forward, whilst still carrying out his defensive responsibilities.

The 29-year-old has good defensive awareness and is well-rounded with his passing attributes, too. Moreno has shown he is capable of establishing himself as a starting left-back after replacing Lucas Digne in Emery's side - and he could repeat this accomplishment at Stamford Bridge, if signed.
