Who is Aine Donegan as Irish amateur one shot off the lead at US Open?

Irish amateur Aine Donegan was an unlikely name near the top of the leaderboard after Round One of the US Open at Pebble Beach with the Clare woman just one shot off the lead.

Donegan carded a spectacular three-under-par 69 to sit in a tie for third place and is just one shot off leaders Xiyu Lin and Hyo Joo Kim and is also joined by fellow Irish golfer Leona Maguire on the same score.

From Ennis, Co Clare, Donegan is 21 years old and plays her golf out of American college LSU where she also studies and previously attended Indiana University before transferring. Donegan also studied and sat her Leaving Certificate at St. Flannans College in Ennis and her home course is the famous Lahinch Golf Club.

Her heroic first round was made all the more unlikely after United Airlines had lost her clubs when she flew from Dublin to California last weekend and was forced to practice and play with different clubs. The Clare woman took to social media to reveal that when her clubs eventually found their way to Pebble Beach her Honma Driver was broken.

Donegan would tee it up with a Ping driver and it served her well en route to her stunning opening round and was all smiles afterwards.

Speaking to NBC, she said: "[It's] a bit surreal and up and down. I didn't start off great but brought it back and made two good pars on my third and fourth holes and then held out for eagle from about 96 yards.

"I had a bit of a rough start but just kept with it and luckily things went in my favour and on the back nine I got more comfortable and finished pretty strong."

And speaking of her driver mishap, she said: "I flew in from Scotland to Dublin then Dublin to Newark then to San Francisco so I was travelling about 30 hours at least to then find that my clubs weren't there. It was a bit annoying and I played my first practice round with Lexi [Thompson] with clubs that didn't belong to me. Scott the Ping rep gave me them for the day and I was hitting the driver quite well.

"I remember I said on the 16th hole to my caddy that I might keep this Driver and Lexi goes 'I think that'd be a good idea'.

"The next day the clubs arrived and the driver was broken so I had no choice but to keep the driver but I threw the new Ping 3 Wood and Hybrid into the bag as well."
