Who Glenn Hoddle blamed for Chelsea's penalty miss against Valencia - and it wasn't Ross Barkley

Former Chelsea man Glenn Hoddle has waded into the penalty debate after the Blues' dramatic 1-0 defeat to Valencia in the Champions League.

Frank Lampard's men enjoyed the better of the possession and more attempts on goal but when it came to execution, the Spanish side prevailed.

Mason Mount suffered an ankle injury early in the first half and left the field before a troubled Valencia side edged the contest thanks to Rodrigo's well-worked goal.

Valencia came into the match on the back of a 5-2 defeat against Barcelona, while Chelsea beat Wolves by the same score last time out.

But it was Chelsea who couldn't contain Valencia in the end despite a late penalty opportunity. Valencia's Daniel Wass was penalised for a handball in the box and the decision was confirmed by VAR.

Ross Barkley was the Chelsea player who jumped to take the spot-kick the quickest despite Jorginho, Willian and Tammy Abraham also chatting with the attacking midfielder in the build-up to the attempt.

Hoddle claims these discussions will have played a part in the missed penalty, with Barkley subsequently hitting the bar.

"So many players went up to Ross Barkley before the penalty which wouldn't have helped him," Hoddle told BT Sport.

"He has got to score from there if he takes that responsibility.

"Every team should have a designated penalty taker. It's a bit of a head scratcher really."

Valencia ended up prevailing in the first match of the Champions League group stage for both sides, with Hoddle adding that he thought the La Liga side were good value for the win.

"You have got to say to Valencia: Well done. They deserve the win and they played well. It was a wonderfully taken goal from Rodrigo," Hoddle added.
