Who Gary Neville picked as his Manager of the Year after Liverpool claim

Gary Neville has admitted that he is “relieved” Liverpool can’t win a quadruple - but has made a claim about Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool came up short in the Premier League title race on Sunday. Despite winning 3-1 at home to Wolves, the Reds finished one point behind Manchester City, who beat Aston Villa 3-2 at the Etihad to be crowned champions.

Talk in recent weeks has surrounded Liverpool’s chances of winning an unprecedented quadruple after winning the FA Cup and Carabao Cup and qualifying for the Champions League final.. Now that is no longer possible, Manchester United legend Neville is happy. But he admits Jurgen Klopp would still be his manager of the season.

“The effort and their desire every minute of every day and the demands these managers are putting on these players,” said Neville of Reds boss Klopp and City manager Pep Guardiola on his self-titled Sky Sports podcast.

“We’re seeing a Paisley, Shankly, Ferguson-Wenger era, we're seeing it in front of us, we should respect it. Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola are delivering greatness in front of our very eyes and we need to appreciate that. They’re going for each other.

“Liverpool go to Paris next week in the Champions League on a treble, a cup treble, to do that is unbelievable. I’m relieved they’re not going to win a quadruple and a treble with a Premier League but that’s a Manchester United perspective not lacking respect for what they’re doing, what they’re doing is top class.

“I voted for Jurgen Klopp for the manager of the season, because what he’s done at Liverpool, what they’ve done with what they’re up against. But this manager (Pep Guardiola) is going to go down as one of the greatest in history, his style of football, influence on the game. His influence goes outside of what he’s achieving at Manchester City, that takes a lot to do.”

Neville went on to defend City’s spending in the transfer market.

“That’s hard work always winning this league but this season more than ever,” he said. “They [Man City] have had brilliant teams to play against, an incredible opponent in Liverpool who’ve pushed them until the end but they’ve got there.

“They’ve won it four times in five years and I think it’s only Bob Paisley and Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United which have achieved it in modern times.

“It takes some doing, it’s easy to say they’ve got money, all top clubs have - Manchester United, Liverpool, but Manchester City have got more money and to keep getting players back every single year to go to the end.”
