Who do the bookies think will be the first North of Tyne mayor?

Bookies have got Labour's Jamie Driscoll as the clear favourite heading into the final days of the North of Tyne mayoral campaign .

Voters in Newcastle , Northumberland and North Tyneside will go to the polls on Friday to vote for the region's first mayor.

Labour went into the race as de facto favourites but Ladbrokes had the race looking quite tight until recent days.

But there's been a surge of money backing Jamie Driscoll to get over the line in the landmark race.

The bookmakers have him at 1/16, miles ahead of his nearest competitor John McCabe , the independent candidate who came from no where to make a mark on the election, on 12/1.

The Conservative candidate Charlie Hoult is out at 16/1, Ukip's Hugh Jackson is at 50/1 and John Appleby is at 100/1.

A Ladbrokes spokesperson said: "Punters think that the Tories won't be pulling off any shocks on Thursday.

"90% of all the money staked has been on Jamie Driscoll and the only real challenge we can now see to Labour might come from Independent John McCabe."

Although residents will cast their votes tomorrow - using a second preference voting system - we won't know who has won until Friday afternoon.
