Who’d want to join the Garrick Club?

I fail to understand why the Guardian devoted almost an entire page to the fact that the Garrick Club will continue to exclude women from its membership (Garrick Club to remain all-male bastion, 7 July). But then I also fail to understand why any intelligent, self-respecting person, man or woman, would want to be a member of the Garrick Club.

Whenever I have been there, as a guest of a member, I have found it to be fusty and uncomfortable, with all the worst features that used to characterise the old, unreformed boys’ public schools, complete with the communal dining, lousy food and an excess of self-important, boring members clad in uniform clothing which includes a garishly coloured tie.
