Who could Chelsea face in Champions League last-16? Knockout stage draw pots and seedings

Chelsea secured their spot in the last-16 of this season’s Champions League with a game to spare and are now looking forward to next Monday’s draw.

The Blues lifted the famous trophy at the end of last season, as Thomas Tuchel - who only took over from Frank Lampard midway through the campaign - guided the club to victory over Manchester City in an all-English final in Porto.

However, the Blues could end up regretting the goal they conceded in stoppage time in their final group game against Zenit St. Petersburg, which earned the Russian side a 3-3 draw and saw Tuchel’s side slip to second in the group behind Juventus.

Who could Chelsea face in Champions League last-16?

As a group runner-up, Chelsea will be drawn against a team who finished as top of their group.

Uefa’s rules stipulate teams from the same country cannot meet until the quarter-final stage, so Chelsea will avoid any English opposition, removing Liverpool, Manchester United and Manchester City as potential opposition.

Teams also cannot face an opponent that they have already played in the group stage, so the Blues will not be drawn against Juventus.

Chelsea possible last-16 opponents: Bayern Munich, Ajax, Lille, Real Madrid, Villarreal

When is the last-16 draw?

The draw for the last-16 will take place on Monday, December 13, 2021, starting at 11am GMT. For more information, check out our draw guide here.
