WHO chief issues grim coronavirus warning as number of cases hits 13 million

The head of the World Health Organization has issued a grim warning as the number of coronavirus cases around the world hit 13 million.

WHO Director General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that "too many countries are headed in the wrong direction".

It comes as more than 13.14 million people have been reported to be infected by the novel coronavirus globally and 571,854 have died, according to a tally.

The first cases were identified in China in December 2019.

And Director general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Monday there would be "no return to the 'old normal' for the foreseeable future".

His stark message came as 230,000 Covid-19 cases were reported to the WHO on Sunday, with almost 80% occurring in 10 countries and 50% in just two.

Dr Adhanom Ghebreyesus gave three key steps that all countries around the world must take to get Covid-19 under control.

He told reporters: "There will be no return to the 'old normal' for the foreseeable future.

"But there is a roadmap to a situation where we can control the disease and get on with our lives. But this is going to require three things.

"First, a focus on reducing mortality and suppressing transmission.

"Second, an empowered, engaged community that takes individual behaviour measures in the interest of each other.

"And third, we need strong government leadership and coordination of comprehensive strategies that are communicated clearly and consistently."
