Who Celtic could face in Champions League qualifying as possible return to nightmare venue beckons

The dust has barely settled on a season to forget for Celtic but they're a club well aware summer downtime is in short supply.

European ambitions put paid to notions of an extended holiday and a first Champions League qualifier is as little as 65 days away.

Eddie Howe is set to be appointed manager and it's a countdown which will dominate his thoughts as he begins the not inconsiderable task of reshaping a downtrodden Parkhead outfit.

These qualifiers are notoriously treacherous, as Celtic have discovered over the past three seasons.

They have faltered against AEK, Cluj and most recently Ferencvaros in successive doomed bids to reach the lucrative group stage.

Having surrendered the Premiership title to Rangers and their place in the Champions Path, the ties could get even tougher.

It's not all bad news, however, given Scotland's improved coefficient has afforded Celtic a place in qualifying which would not have been available in previous seasons.

They will also start in the second qualifying round and their potential list of opponents has just about taken shape, with the traditional two-legged format returning following its pandemic-enforced suspension in 2020/21.

Celtic will be seeded when the draw comes around, which means they will avoid a clash with PSV Eindhoven and an as yet undecided third seed.

Two of the three unseeded teams they could play are already confirmed as Galatasaray and Rapid Vienna.

Sparta Prague - who battered Celtic 4-1 twice in the Europa League last season - are currently in limbo until the conclusion of the Danish Superliga on Monday night.

Denmark's champion is yet to be crowned but it's the runner-up who will finish shaping Celtic's second round fate.

One of Brondby, Midjtylland and Copenhagen will take the title with just one round of fixtures left to play.

If it's the latter, they will muscle Sparta out as the final seed due to their superior UEFA club coefficient.

That scenario would ensure Celtic play one of Sparta, Galatasaray or Rapid Vienna.

If either Brondby or Midjtylland win the title, they will become the final unseeded club and Sparta will therefore join Celtic and PSV as seeds.
