Who better to run a Ninja Warrior gym than an orthopaedic surgeon?

Harry demonstrating the rings

Greg Harvey says a lot of people laugh when they hear that an orthopaedic surgeon runs a trampoline gym and Ninja Warrior obstacle course.

Dr Harvey has been working as a surgeon for 15 years in Hobart.

He got involved with running a trampoline club about seven years ago.

"My kids were at a trampoline club in a little shed next door to our land," he said.

"Then that folded and there were 150 people with no club, so they asked Felicity and I to come in and start a new club — which we did."

Recently Dr Harvey fitted out one of the sheds on his property with obstacles inspired by the Ninja Warrior television franchise.

"I've loved this for 20 years, watching the Japanese show," he said.

"We thought, 'what a use for a shed'.

"Now that we've seen the [Australian] show, we've got our builder starting on some more metal trusses and we're going to expand onto some of the obstacles that we see on the show... to make it more relevant for next year's trials."

Dr Harvey said interest in the obstacle course had grown since the show had gone to air locally, with kids and adults alike wanting to have a go.

Using mats and foam pits instead of water, the course in the shed is drier than the one seen on TV — but Dr Harvey said it was just as hard.

"You've got to be able to move your own body weight around," Harry, an Eastside Activity Centre employee, said.

"It's also a bit of skill as well ... like with the swinging doors, if you swing at the right time you're not fighting against the momentum of the door, you're just going with it."

Dr Harvey said he hoped to see Tasmanian competitors in the next season of Australian Ninja Warrior, perhaps including one or two of his staff.

"We're keen later in the year to run a Tasmanian championship, once we get our last obstacles built," he said.
