Who becomes Duke of Edinburgh now that Prince Philip has died?

Buckingham Palace has announced that the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip, has died age 99.

Prince Philip was given his Duke of Edinburgh title ahead of his marriage to the Queen, then Princess Elizabeth, in 1947.

Now that he has died, the question is being asked, who will inherit the Duke of Edinburgh title?

It is thought that the title will be passed onto Prince Edward - as he is the only son of The Queen and Prince Philip who doesn't yet have a duke or duchess title.

Prince Charles is Duke of Cornwall and Prince Andrew is Duke of York but Prince Edward has the titled of Earl of Wessex.

It is understood that Edward wad previously offered the dukedom of Cambridge by the Queen upon his marriage to Sophie, Countess of Wessex.

But it's reported he turned it down so that he could be lined-up as the next Duke of Edinburgh, when his father dies.

Constitutional expert Iain MacMarthanne explained: "In respect of the dukedom of Edinburgh, it was felt, to ensure its survival, that it should pass to another of his sons, this being Prince Edward."

As well as being lined-up for the Duke of Edinburgh title, Prince Edward has also contributed to his father's legacy with working on the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme.

The Duke of Edinburgh title dates back to 1726, when it was created and bestowed on Prince Frederick, King George I's grandson.

Announcing his death, a statement from Buckingham Palace said: "It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle."

Prince Philip retired from his Royal duties on 2 August 2017, at the age of 96, having completed 22,219 solo engagements since 1952.
