Who are Wet Leg? The indie rock band who won twice at the Grammy Awards 2023 and whose name has everyone scratching their heads

It's the day after the 65th annual Grammy Awards. Music fans and critics alike are reacting to the winners and losers of the night which always make for interesting water cooler conversations and hot takes.

But one band in particular has left viewers scratching their heads, not only for the two Grammy wins over powerhouses like Bjork and Arcade Fire, but also their peculiar name. Wet Leg ended the night with two honours after winning the Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album and another for Best Alternative Music Performance for their song 'Chaise Longue'.

But who are Wet Leg, where are they from and what is the inspiration behind their name?

Wet Leg are a British indie rock band from the Isle of Wight. The band was formed by long time friends Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers.

The pair met while studying at Platform One College of Music on the Isle of Wight in 2019. They have since been joined by drummer Henry Holmes, bass player Ellis Durand and guitarist Josh Omead Mobaraki who were on hand to receive their awards at the Grammys.

The meaning behind the name

Rhian and Hester have given two reasons for the meaning behind the band's name. During an interview with a local news site they said it came about after putting random emojis together when coming up with a name for the band. Rhian said that the water and leg emoji were hit and "it just kind of stuck.”

In another interview German Youtube music channel called Diffuser the pair also said that the name was inspired by an Isle of Wight term used to describe out of towners. In the Isle of Wight people who cross the Solent to reach the isle were referred to as having a ‘wet leg’ after getting off a boat.

In what has been a whirlwind two years for the band, they were signed by independent record label Domino Recording Company the same year they were formed. They released their debut single, Chaise Lounge in June 2021 which became a hit gaining them new fans and millions of streams and views.

They have also performed on TV performing twice on Later...with Jools Holland. Their debut album debut self-titled album, released on 8 April 2022.

During their acceptance speech at this year’s Grammys Rhian Teasdale said: "This is so funny, thanks so much! What are we doing here? I don't know. But here we are!

"This year has been so surprising. Starting this band has been such a surprise and being on the roads.

"We couldn't have done it without our amazing crew, and that all started with Karima Kingsley, so I just want to give a really big thank you to her. And Alayna, Martin, Laurence and Jordan and all of our amazing team!”
