Scottish clubs in Europe. For such a small nation, we certainly know how to make our mark.
Whether it be Celtic ’s 1967 European Cup win, Sir Alex Ferguson leading Aberdeen to Cup Winner’s Cup glory, Dundee United knocking Barcelona out the UEFA Cup or Rangers ’ run to the final, you rarely have to look far to find a Scottish team upsetting the odds on the big stage.
This season alone we’ve seen Neil Lennon ’s men conquer Rome, while Steven Gerrard ’s side refused to be knocked out even by high-flying Braga in their run to the last 16 - a run which isn’t entirely over yet.
Fans up and down the country have enjoyed continental jaunts. As far down the ladder as the third tier, League One leaders Raith Rovers once took on Bayern Munich in the UEFA Cup, though Falkirk’s solitary European venture was a little less famous.
In total there have been 1,971 goals scored by the 21 Scottish clubs who have taken to the European stage over the years.
